It’s only in recent years that people have been paying attention to the mental and physical health of employees. So, we have taken a look at why it’s something that you should be paying attention to.

Why is it Important to Promote Health and Wellbeing at Work

There are a number of benefits that come with promoting health and wellbeing at work, for both employees and employers alike. When attention is given to health and wellbeing, employees find it easier to be happier at work, and they are more likely to enjoy going into work every day. For a business, happier employees leads to less time off and reduced staff turnover. It’s also fantastic in terms of PR, as who doesn’t look favourably on a company that’s paying attention to employee needs?

What Does Health and Wellbeing Mean?

Promoting health and wellbeing in the workplace means ensuring that all employees are mentally and physically in a good place during their time at work. It means working hard to make sure they are happy, satisfied and feeling positive about being at work. They should feel confident and content with how things are going, not feeling overworked and undervalued. Luckily, there are a lot of things that you can do to promote health and wellbeing at work.

Create a Wellbeing Programme

If you want to promote health and wellbeing in the workplace on a long term basis, a wellbeing programme needs to be established. There is a lot of emphasis being put on health and wellbeing at work lately, and employees are now expecting employers to have strategies in place to support this. This means that businesses need to approach wellbeing from all angles, and not just focus on the physical or mental side of things.

With a programme, support can be provided and managed in a way that works for everyone, and it can be provided on a long term basis. Employees know what help is out there, and employers can keep track of what’s working. Plus, businesses with a wellbeing programme are more likely to engage and retain employees, which benefits the business as a whole.

Emotion Wellbeing

Emotional wellbeing in the workplace is just as important as physical wellbeing, as this is what keeps employees motivated and productive throughout the day. To ensure employees are being looked after emotionally, you need to ensure their career development and personal development needs are being met. It’s also important to ensure that everyone feels included and part of a friendly team.

Wellness days are a good way to boost emotional wellbeing. These provide an employee with time away from work to rest, recharge and relax. Offering counselling is also another good option, making everyone aware that there is always someone to talk to professionally.

Physical Wellbeing

A lot of people find it difficult to keep on top of their physical health when they are at work, which is why physical wellbeing in the workplace is so important. Access to healthy food, standing desks and walking meetings all make a big difference. You could also organise a physical activity for outside of work, such as group walks or yoga sessions. It’s a lot easier for an employee to exercise and be physically active if it’s being encouraged at work.
