How to Avoid Burnout at Work

Regardless of the job you do and the industry that you work in, burnout is always a possibility. Burnout is described as being a state of emotional and mental exhaustion, and it can sometimes present itself as physical tiredness. It’s caused by excessive and prolonged stress, which is why work is often the cause. It’s normal to feel stressed and tired with work occasionally, but feeling this way too often could be a sign of burnout. Below, we have given four key ways to avoid burnout at work.

Set Realistic Goals

Everyone knows how important it is to set goals at work, especially if you want to avoid burnout. But, these goals should be quantifiable and achievable. Break them down into manageable tasks to prevent getting overwhelmed, and reward yourself for achieving them. It’s a lot easier to feel on top of things at work when you know exactly what you need to do, when you need to do it and what other tasks are coming up. Plus, achieving goals will give you the encouragement to continue working hard.

Take Regular Breaks

A lot of people underestimate the importance of taking regular breaks at work, even though it’s a huge part of avoiding burnout in the workplace. It’s impossible to work forever without a mental and physical break, so schedule regular breaks in your day. Take the time to get outside, stretch your legs or have a healthy snack. Who knows, you may even get the breakthrough you need while your mind is elsewhere. Taking a break is a good way to refresh your mind, so you can approach things with a new perspective.

Learn to Say No

Though there are bound to be times at work when you find yourself busier than usual, it’s impossible to take on everything yourself. This is why it’s important to set boundaries, so as not to crowd your schedule and overwork yourself. Don’t be afraid to say no and encourage delegation to others. Not only does learning to say no helo to avoid burnout at work, but it also gives you the time to complete your existing tasks to a high standard.

Talk to Someone

Sharing and talking through your issues can help. Whether you speak to colleagues, family, friends or even a therapist, talking to someone can help to lighten the load. After all, a problem shared is a problem halved. Someone else might have a unique perspective on your workload, or they could have a solution that you hadn’t yet thought of.
