5 Ways to Improve Time Management

Business Advice | 23 February 2023 | 1 year ago

Time management is a difficult skill to grasp, especially when you have a busy work day ahead of you and a tendency to get distracted. Luckily, there are things that you can do to improve things.

What is Time Management?

Time management is the ability to use your time effectively and in a productive way. It’s a term that is usually used at work to describe how well someone manages the time they have throughout the work day. Being able to manage your time well increases the chances of tasks being done on time. Good time management requires you to plan, organise and delegate your time effectively throughout the day.

Benefits of Improving Time Management

There are a lot of benefits that come with good time management, which is why so many people are interested in finding out how to develop time management skills. Managing your time helps to reduce your stress levels, as you’re less likely to be rushing around trying to complete tasks at the last minute. It can also lead to a better work life balance, higher levels of procrastination, greater focus and an improved quality of work. You’re also likely to find the day simpler and easier to navigate when you have enough time to get everything done.

How to Improve Time Management

Minimise Distractions

It’s a lot harder to get things done when you are distracted, even if the distractions are related to work. Set yourself periods of time with your emails turned off, which will allow you to focus solely on the task at hand.

Plan Your Days

It’s a lot easier to improve time management if you plan your days. Have a clear idea of what you are doing and when. You can do this with a simple ‘to do’ list, or with a thorough breakdown of what you need to get done. This will help you to stay on track and minimise the amount of time wasted.

Take Regular Breaks

Taking regular breaks might seem counterproductive to getting a lot of work done, but it’s actually a tried and tested way of improving time management. The Pomodoro method is perfect for this. It centres around breaking your day into 25 minute periods, followed by a five minute break.

Create Lists

To avoid feeling overwhelmed with keeping on top of tasks, create a list of things to do. Platforms such as Trello and Asana help you to keep on top of actions and encourage you to focus on one task at a time. It’s a lot easier to manage your time when you can clearly see what needs to be done.

Delegate Tasks

Don’t be afraid to delegate tasks, especially if other people are willing and able to help out. This will give you more time to focus on other tasks, without worrying about something else going unfinished.
