The Power of Outsourcing: Freeing Up Time for Business Growth

Business Advice | 7 October 2024 | 2 years ago

Running a business isn’t easy and you probably find yourself being pulled in all different directions. You’re not alone. One minute you have clients to meet and deals to make, the next you’re managing employee conflicts, annual leave requests, salaries and social media marketing. A lot is expected of you and it’s hard to keep up, which is why a lot of businesses outsource. By outsourcing certain tasks to others, you can free up your schedule, streamline operations and direct your focus toward expanding your business.

The 3 Types of Outsourcing

One of the first things that you need to do when you’re outsourcing as a business is decide how you’re going to approach things. Not all forms of outsourcing are the same. There are three main types of outsourcing; onshoring, nearshoring and offshoring. Onshoring means hiring a contractor or company that’s located close to home, somewhere else in the UK. For example, you might enlist the help of a an accountancy firm based in Manchester, even though you’re located in London. This tends to be the most convenient form of outsourcing.

Nearshoring is slightly different, as it means hiring a contractor or company that’s located in a country close to you. For example, you might hire a digital marketing agency based in Ireland or France. If you’re in the UK, these locations are close, but not as close as onshoring. If you hire a company that’s further away, you’re approaching outsourcing by offshoring projects. This provides an opportunity for you to save money, especially if you hire a team in a country with a lower cost of living.

Here’s How Outsourcing Can Help With Business Growth

  • You Can Focus On Your Own Skills and Expertise – Outsourcing enables you to transfer any work outside of your expertise to the experts. Instead of trying to push yourself towards a deliverable outcome, only to end up disappointing yourself, you can focus on activities that contribute to the growth of the business. You can do so knowing that other activities are under the care of professionals. Your focus can be on things such as strategy and innovation, while such specialised jobs are left to the people who really know what they’re doing.
  • It’ll Save You Money – There’s a high chance that outsourcing will save you money in the long run. Instead of hiring full time employees, outsourcing allows you to only pay for the services as and when you need them. This reduces overhead costs like salaries and training, making outsourcing a more cost effective solution. This is most noticeable for project based work or temporary requirements.
  • You’ll Gain Access to Specialised Expertise – You can’t be an expert in everything, even though you would like to be. Outsourcing gives you access to professionals with the right skills for certain tasks, skills that might not be readily available within your existing team. Teaming up with outsourcing experts ensures high quality results and keeps you competitive in your industry, all without having to invest time and money into hiring someone in-house.
  • It Can Increase Efficiency – One of the biggest appeals of outsourcing is that it boosts efficiency. Outsourcing to an experienced team of professionals can streamline your operations, ensuring tasks are completed efficiently and to a high standard. You don’t have to worry about the speed and quality of tasks, as you will have handed everything over to someone else.

How to Outsource Effectively

  • Find The Best Tasks to Outsource – Begin by looking at all of the tasks in your business and comparing how they would work with outsourcing. Not all tasks work equally well. Look for areas where you lack expertise, for tasks that take up too much time, or tasks that are essential but don’t quite align with your core competencies.
  • Choose the Right Outsourcing Team – Finding the right freelancer, contractor or agency is an important part of outsourcing successfully. Look for those with experience in your specific industry, a proven track record working on similar jobs and day-to-day workplace values that align with yours. Look at their portfolios, read customer reviews and carry out interviews to make sure that you’re choosing a partner that can deliver exactly what you’re looking for. You don’t want to commit to working with them, only to find that you don’t align.
  • Set Clear Expectations – Before any work begins, clearly outline the project scope, deadlines deliverables, and communicate the methods you expect to be used. If you go into things without setting clear expectations, you’re opening the door for miscommunication and disappointment on both ends. Having these expectations in writing ensures both you and your outsourcing partner are aligned, preventing misunderstandings down the line.
  • Communicate Well and Openly – Good communication is an important part of outsourcing. Even if the tasks that you’re outsourcing are small and easy to handle, communication is important. Schedule regular meetings, provide feedback and be as accessible as possible to guide the project as needed. This ensures that the work stays on track and meets your standards.
  • Start Small and Scale – If you’re new to outsourcing, start with smaller projects and see how things go. There’s no need to rush into things. Starting off small will allow you to build trust and refine your process over time, before handing over more complex tasks. As you gain confidence and see the positive results of outsourcing, you can gradually outsource more and more tasks, taking the benefits to other parts of your business.
