How to protect your profit during rising costs

Staff writer | 4 April 2026 | 6 months ago

Over the last few years, you’ll probably have noticed how quickly the cost of running a business can go up. Prices for energy go up (and rarely down), costs for suppliers increase, wages rise and inflation has an effect on almost every part of business. Even businesses that have a long track record of success can see their profits suddenly drop if they don’t keep costs in check.

As a business owner, you can’t always control rising costs, but you can control how you deal with them. Businesses that take proactive steps to protect their profits are much better able to deal with uncertainty and stay financially stable.

You Can’t Always Control Rising Costs

One of the hardest things for business owners is that a lot of cost increases come from outside the business. You might not be able to stop these pressures, but you need to be ready to deal with them.

Rising prices, the price of energy, supply chain issues, minimum wage increases and tax changes can all have an impact on your business’ profits. They can lower your profit margins, even if your sales stay at the  the same level. That’s why it’s not enough to just focus on increasing your revenue, you also need to make sure your profit is safe.

Keeping your profits safe during rising costs makes sure your business stays strong. Even when outside pressures rise, focusing on making money and maintaining profits helps to keep things stable. It’s not always the businesses that make the most money that survive tough economic times, sometimes it’s the ones that do the best job of managing their margins.

How to Keep Your Profit Safe

Check Your Prices Regularly

One of the best ways to protect your profits is to set higher prices. But, a lot of business owners are hesitant to raise prices, even when their costs have increased in a big way.

Not changing your prices can quickly eat into your profit margins. Over time, this can mean that you’re working harder, but making less money. Determine if your prices still match your real costs and if competitors are changing their prices.

It’s also important to be honest with customers. Most customers understand when price increases are clearly explained, especially when they are caused by rising costs.

Know What Your Real Profit Margins Are

A lot of business owners keep a close eye on their sales, but they don’t pay as much attention to their actual margins. It’s hard to make smart choices if you don’t know how profitable something is. Take the time to look over gross profit margins, net profit margins, how much money each product or service makes, and profitability by project or customer.

You might find that some products or services have much higher margins than others. It’s not uncommon for business owners to put a lot of effort into products that make a lot of money, but not much profit. Knowing your most profitable offerings means you can focus your efforts on the right parts of your business.

Cut Unnecessary Costs

Cutting costs doesn’t always mean making big, dramatic cuts. Small unnecessary costs – such as subscriptions to software that aren’t used often, overly high pricing and contracts with suppliers, using too much energy and processes that waste time or resources because they aren’t working well – all add up. Checking operational costs on a regular basis can also help you to find places where you can save money, without negatively impacting service or quality.

Make Your Operations More Efficient

One of the best ways to protect profits is to be efficient, as you can make more money with the same amount of sales. Making things more efficient could mean automating repeatable tasks, putting new software or technology to use, making communication and workflows better within your team, and reducing delays. These improvements in efficiency lower costs and free up resources, which can be used to grow the business over time.

Improve Relationships with Suppliers

Building strong relationships with your suppliers can help to lessen the effects of price hikes. Think about making deals that last longer to keep prices stable, discussing discounts for buying in bulk, shopping around with other suppliers and working together on order forecasting.

A lot of suppliers are willing to be flexible, especially with loyal customers who have been with them for a long time, and you might be able to get better terms or avoid sudden price increases.

Focus on Valuable Customers

Not all of your customers help you to make money in the same way. Some might need more time, help or resources, and they might also spend less money. Others might always buy services or goods that are worth a lot, without you having to put too much strain on your operations.

If you know which customers make you the most money, you can better focus your marketing, sales and service efforts. This will make your business more profitable, without you having to work harder.

Check Your Financial Health Regularly

One of the biggest financial mistakes business owners make is not looking at their finances often enough. If you only look at your finances at the end of the year, it might be too late to fix any problems. Instead, think about looking at your finances every few months, which helps you to spot trends early and act quickly. When you know exactly where you stand financially, you can make better strategic choices.
