Retail Trends to Watch in 2025
2025 is fast approaching and we’re excited to see what it has in store for retail businesses. There’s been a lot of change happening in retail over the last few years – from the introduction of AI and social commerce, to omnishopping and next day delivery – and these changes are set to continue, with many more joining in. Driven by new technologies, changing consumer behaviour and a greater demand for diversity, retailers face a unique opportunity to redefine how they connect with shoppers.
2025’s Top Retail Trends
- The Growth of Subconscious Commerce – Subconscious commerce is set to be big for retail businesses in 2025. Using data analytics and AI – including purchase history information, browsing behaviour and social media activity – subconscious commerce involves predicting customers’ needs before they realise those needs for themselves, and finding a personalised solution to meet those needs. It’s a way to anticipate what customers want from products, and recommending products they’re likely to be interested in.
- Consumers Leaning Towards Resale Marketplaces – There has been a big increase in the number of people using resale marketplaces in recent years, such as Vinted, Depop and eBay. This will continue into 2025, as consumers become more aware of resale marketplaces providing a more affordable, sustainable way to shop. By using resale marketplaces, people can buy what they need at a fraction of the price, whilst also shopping in a sustainable, planet-friendly way.
- A Focus on Shopping Experiences – With so many competitor businesses out there, retailers need to stand out as providing more than a simple shopping experience. In 2025, that’s going to focus on immersive, interactive ways to shop. This could include product demonstrations, in-store events, workshops and trying products via a digital medium. Rather than simply browsing and purchasing a product, retailers are going to be providing a full experience, in the hope of boosting brand loyalty and encouraging repeat business.
- Omnishopping is On the Rise – Omnishopping has been slowly rising in recent years, but 2025 is when it’s really going to have an impact. Omnishopping refers to shopping that combines online, offline and mobile shopping, into one, seamless customer experience. Regardless of where or how a customer is shopping, omnishopping ensures that they experience the same high quality service. It gives customers the flexibility to go back and forth between shopping online, in-person or on a mobile device, without the quality of their retail experience being compromised.
- Increased Use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) – There’s been a lot of talk about AI recently, and it’s made a mark on a lot of industries, including retail. A lot of retailers are already using AI to analyse customer data and create personalised shopping experiences. For example, by taking a look at a customer’s previous purchases and browsing history, AI can suggest products that they’re likely to be interested in. Using AI isn’t going to slow down as we enter 2025, as retailers are finding more and more ways to make use of it. AI chatbots and virtual assistants are already helping to provide 24/7 customer service, ensuring customers receive an unmatched shopping experience at all times.
- Diverse and inclusive Products – There’s going to be a real focus on creating diverse and inclusive products in 2025. For example, products that have been created with disabilities in mind, or those created for ethnic minorities. There has previously been a lack of diversity in the retail space, but many brands are going above and beyond to cater to a wider range of customers. Retailers are becoming increasingly aware of the benefits that come with appealing to a wider audience, ranging from creating an inclusive brand that everyone can use, to boosting sales and growth.
- Sustainability and Eco-Friendliness – You’re sure to have noticed that sustainability has been a hot topic of conversation in recent years, with consumers increasingly demanding eco-friendliness and sustainability from their favourite brands. In 2025, retailers will embrace this demand by finding ways to become more planet-friendly. This can be done in a number of ways, such as swapping to plastic-free packaging and reducing waste, or working with suppliers who prioritise sustainability and energy-saving. As we journey into 2025, consumers are favouring brands that align with their own eco-friendly values.
- Quick, Convenient Deliveries – The demand for quick and convenient delivery has become a top priority in retail, and consumers now expect speed across every stage of the purchasing journey. Not being able to provide quick checkout processes and speedy delivery could see retailers losing out to competitors, which is why quick, seamless deliveries are so important. It’s not enough to simply send out a package and expect customers to guess when it’ll arrive. In 2025, consumers want order tracking and real-time delivery updates. If there’s a delay or change to the date of delivery, customers want to know immediately.
- The Rise of Social Commerce – Social media platforms have turned into popular places to shop, and many retailers are using it as a way to sell products through social media feeds. Shopping has become part of day-to-day scrolling on Instagram, TikTok and Facebook, and customers can now place orders without having to leave the app. This makes purchases feel effortless, especially when customers can complete transactions with just a few taps, in a matter of minutes. There’s no need to click off the app, head to a website or another app, and then try to find the product again.
