The Importance of Employee Training and Development

Business Advice | 7 June 2024 | 2 years ago

Employee training and development is something that a growing number of businesses are focusing on, but why is this? Employee training and development is no longer a ‘nice to have’ in the workplace, it’s now a key part of making sure that your business thrives in a competitive business landscape.

Why is Training Important in the Workplace

Training is important in the workplace because it gives employees the skills and knowledge needed to do their jobs well. Ongoing training ensures that employees can keep up with changes to processes, industry updates and new technology. Without training, employees could struggle to meet job expectations and hit targets, and their productivity could suffer.

Plus, training is a good way to create a positive work environment. It helps new employees settle into their roles, reducing the learning curve and improving staff retention rates. For existing employees, training provides opportunities to learn new skills and further their careers.

The Difference Between Training and Development

When it comes to training employees, the terms ‘training’ and ‘development’ are often used interchangeably. But, they actually mean slightly different things.

  • Training – Generally, training refers to teaching employees new skills that could be beneficial for their current role. For example, learning how to use a new software or tool, or familiarising them with a new business process. Training tends to focus on specific areas of knowledge that employees need to successfully complete day-to-day tasks. Training also tends to be a short-term process.
  • Development – Development is a longer process, one that’s focused on preparing employees for future roles, responsibilities and career aspirations. It tends to be focused on personal and professional growth, rather than specific tasks. Development focuses on the future and improving an employee’s abilities generally, helping them to take the next step in their career.

The Purpose of Training

The main reason for training employees is to develop their skills in the workplace, ensuring that they have the skills needed to complete their tasks as effectively and efficiently as possible. There are a range of different ways to approach training, depending on who is being trained and the industry that you’re working in. For new employees, training is part of the onboarding process, which ensures that they understand what’s expected of them at work and how the business functions. For existing employees, training tends to be focused on refining existing skills, learning new skills and staying up to date with industry changes.

Employee training can also be used to address concerns about an individual employee’s performance, to ensure everyone is familiar with the legal and regulatory requirements of the industry, and to keep employees informed about the latest tools, technologies and processes.

Benefits of Training Employees

  • Increased Employee Productivity and Performance – When an employee is trained, they are able to work quickly, efficiently and productively. With a full range of skills, employees are likely to make fewer mistakes, which means less time spent fixing those mistakes and less supervision needed. All of this leads to increased employee productivity and performance.
  • Better Employee Retention – It’s not uncommon for employees to be tempted to new roles, especially if they feel undervalued or ‘stuck’ in their current job. By offering training and development, you show employees that you value them enough to put time and money into helping them grow. It’s a way to boost employee engagement, encouraging them to stay committed to the business.
  • Increased Employee Morale – There’s a lot of stress that comes with any job, but employee training and development can boost morale by making everyone feel valued, supported and capable. This makes it a lot easier to enjoy going into work every day.
  • More Relevant Skills – Employee training and development leads to a business having access to a wide range of relevant skills. Training ensures that employees’ skills remain relevant, ensuring that they are capable of handling current tasks, as well as whatever challenges come their way.
  • Reduced Business Costs – A lot of people make the mistake of assuming that employee training and development is a huge outgoing, but that’s not always the case. Though it does require an initial investment, it can lead to reduced business costs in the long run by reducing errors, improving efficiency and lowering staff turnover.

Types of Training Methods

There are various training methods to choose from, and the right one will depend on the employee, the job, the industry and what they need to learn.

  • Onboarding – Onboarding is for new employees, and it’s aimed at making sure that they are familiar with their new role, responsibilities and the business as a whole. Onboarding is centred around training employees on everything they need to hit the ground running.
  • Reskilling – It’s not uncommon for an employee to move from one department or role, to another department of role, within the same business. Reskilling is designed to provide the training needed to ensure that they can do the new job.
  • Cross-Training – Sometimes, employees need to work across various roles, and cross-training ensures that they’re up to the challenge. It’s a good way to develop skills and knowledge, and it can also be useful for career development as a whole.
  • Upskilling – Learning new skills is a good way to boost an employee’s effectiveness and efficiency in the workplace, and that’s what upskilling does. Upskilling centres on taking an employee’s existing skills to the next level and making sure their skills are as developed as possible.
  • Sales Training – There’s a lot that happens during the sales cycle, and success relies on employees having the skills needed to successfully interact with buyers. Sales training boosts skills and techniques, and shares the best practices needed for interacting with buyers.
  • Customer Service Training – There are a lot of competitor businesses out there, and excellent customer service is one thing that can really help you to stand out from the crowd. Customer service training provides employees with the skills and processes needed to provide a high-quality customer service at all times.
