A lot of people have heard the term ‘employee engagement’, but many are unsure of what the term actually means. In this blog, we take a look at employee engagement and how it can be improved.

What is Employee Engagement?

Employee engagement refers to how enthusiastic, attached and involved employees are towards their job. An engaged employee is one who is passionate about the work they do and the company they work for, and someone who is dedicated to the team as a whole.

Benefits of Strong Employee Engagement

There are a number of benefits of strong employee engagement, which is why it’s something that businesses should strive for. Engaged employees tend to perform better, which means boosted productivity and increased results. Employees are also likely to remain at the company for a long time if they are happy and engaged with their work, which boosts employee retention. A business can also benefit from a better working environment when employees are engaged, as it’s likely that everyone is happy and enjoying their work day, which cuts down on stress and workplace tension.

How to Increase Employee Engagement

There are a number of ways to improve employee engagement, five of which we have listed below.

Strong Communication

There is a lot that goes on in a business, so encourage communication between employees and employers. Create a space where employees feel as though they are always up to date with changes, developments and plans.

Request Honest Feedback

It’s hard to know when someone is unhappy at work, so request honest feedback from employees. With honest feedback, you can make any changes needed to boost employee satisfaction.

Invest in Wellbeing

Employee wellbeing is a key part of boosting employee engagement, so make it something that you invest time and money in. This could involve promoting activities such as team days out, exercise, meditation, paid days off and reward schemes.

Empower Staff

You can increase employee engagement by empowering staff, as this will help people to feel valued and appreciated in the workplace. Employees are much more likely to go above and beyond if they feel like a vital part of the team.

Reward Good Work

You can boost employee engagement by rewarding good work. Someone is much more likely to work hard on a task if they know there’s a reward at the end.

Share the Company’s Purpose and Goals

Employees are much more likely to be engaged if they feel as though everyone is working towards the same purpose and goal, so share these with them. Highlight that the business’ success is a team effort.
