Why User-Generated Content Is a Game-Changer for Small Businesses

Lucy Doyle | 14 January 2025 | 2 years ago

If you’ve been paying attention to the way that digital marketing is developing, you’ll have noticed people talking about user-generated content. But, what is user-generated content and why should it be a part of every small business’ marketing strategy?

What is User-Generated Content?

User-generated content is any type of content – whether that’s photo, video, social media posts or reviews – that’s created by your customers, rather than your business. Instead of you sharing information about how great a product or service is, your customers share their authentic, genuine opinions.

There’s always going to be a level of bias that comes with content created by a business itself. After all, you’re not going to say anything negative about your products or services, even if something isn’t quite as perfect as it should be. This is why people are paying more attention to user-generated content (UGC) knowing that it’s truthful, trustworthy and created by ‘real’ people.

Customers have nothing to gain from sharing UGC, which is what makes it such a powerful marketing tool; there’s no hidden agenda. When potential customers are browsing, they want to know how great a product is from someone who’s just like them, not from the team that created the product.

Popular Types of UGC

There are a lot of different types of UGC and it’s a good idea to try and have a mix, making sure that there’s a type of content that appeals to everyone.

  • Reviews – Reviews are hugely beneficial to a business, especially those that involve customers sharing their positive experiences with products and services. A growing number of consumers seek out reviews before making a purchase, and a handful of glowing reviews could be all it takes to sway someone into buying.
  • Photos – If you’ve spent any time on social media, you’ll know that user-generated photos are prominent, especially on Instagram and Facebook. Customers regularly share photos of the products or services they’ve been happy with, giving a visual representation to others. It’s one thing to say that a business provided a good service, it’s another to showcase it for everyone to see.
  • Videos – With platforms like TikTok and YouTube growing at an impressive rate, video content is more popular than ever, especially UGC. Happy customers can upload videos of products and services in the form of product reviews, tutorials, service reviews and ‘how to’ guides. This ‘puts a face to the name’ of who’s creating the UGC, making what’s being said even more believable.
  • Blogs – A lot of small business owners make the mistake of assuming that blogs are only useful for increasing SEO on the business’ website, but user-generated blogs are just as important. Users can share their thoughts, experiences and reviews with others, giving a detailed look into specific products, services or brand experiences.

The Power of UGC for Small Businesses

When you consider the benefits of UGC, it’s easy to see why it’s something a lot of small businesses are focusing on.

It Builds Trust and Credibility

Today’s consumers can be skeptical, making genuine customer testimonials more invaluable than ever before. UGC acts as social proof, showing potential customers that your product or service delivers on its promises. With the majority of consumers having their purchasing decisions influenced by UGC, incorporating customer content can significantly boost trust and conversions.

It Encourages More Engagement

When customers share their experiences, it creates opportunities for interaction. UGC starts discussions, shares and sometimes even viral moments, helping you to connect with your audience authentically. This kind of organic engagement is hard to replicate with traditional advertising.

It Boosts Visibility Across Platforms

Whether through social media, websites or email campaigns, UGC helps to increase your business’ reach. Algorithms tend to favour authentic content that’s engaged with, which means UGC can put your business in front of more people without the need for expensive campaigns.

It Saves Time and Energy

Creating fresh content is a challenge for any small business. By using UGC, you save resources while adding a unique perspective that resonates with your audience. Repurposing UGC for various platforms also helps streamline your marketing efforts.

It Showcases Diverse Perspectives

Your customer base is likely to be diverse, and UGC reflects this variety. Featuring different customer experiences makes your brand relatable to a broader audience, showcasing the various benefits of your products or services.

It’s a Form of Cost-Effective Marketing

UGC eliminates the need for expensive photoshoots or video production, making it an ideal strategy for small businesses with limited budgets. By encouraging and curating content from customers, you can achieve impressive marketing results at a fraction of the cost.

It Makes Acquisition Easy

UGC is easy to collect through social media, enabling you to create authentic content effortlessly. Its versatility allows you to use UGC on your website, display it in-store and even include it in newsletters, ensuring maximum impact.

It Boosts Customer Loyalty

By featuring your customers’ content, you build a sense of community around your brand. This fosters loyalty and encourages repeat engagement, transforming customers into brand advocates who are happy to promote your business organically.

It Increases Audience Engagement

Seeing their content highlighted by your business motivates customers to interact more and share with their networks, and it makes them want to share more UGC in the future. This increases your visibility, which can lead to boosted brand awareness, engagement and sales.
