Introducing an exciting new infographic, digital marketing specialist Lucy Benton dispels some commonly-held Instagram myths about the social platform that may surprise small business owners.

There is one social network which has grown in popularity exponentially in the past few years, but which may not be the first one business owners will associate with digital marketing.

We are, of course, talking about Instagram. The image sharing platform has massive potential, and now could be the right time for your business to start using it to its advantage.

Unfortunately, many small business owners fail to understand just how effective Instagram really is. This may be because we usually think of it as a platform to share selfies not as something that can seriously help your business.

Setting aside judgment, Instagram has over 800 million active users, which is massive. This also means endless opportunity for you to promote your company, and your products and services, to millions of customers around the world.

On the other hand, 60 per cent of businesses use Instagram, and seven out of ten hashtags are branded. Also, around 80 per cent of users follow at least one brand or company.

This means there is a strong connection between brands and users on Instagram, which can be tapped into in order to boost income, create leads, reach your target audience, and promote products and services.

So, the next time you come across an article telling you that Instagram is not a good business platform, they probably don’t really want to help you. Because Instagram is incredibly effective when used right. As much as one million advertisers each month are not wrong.

Plus, Instagram has the edge when it comes to stuff like hashtags. Although other social networks employ them too, they work the best here. You can use them to discover trending topics and make use of them, especially if they are relevant to your niche or product.

You can also target and seek out new customers based on their interests, and finally, encourage users to use your hashtags when creating their own content.

Check out the infographic below, which dispels some of the most common Instagram myths about using the platfom for business.
