Franchising

Is it Better to Start a Franchise or Start My Own Business?

Business Advice | 20 March 2023 | 1 year ago

If you are thinking about starting a business, you might have considered franchising as an option. There is an undeniable appeal of starting your own business from nothing, but franchising is a way to benefit from running a successful business, without a lot of the hard work at conception.

How Does Franchising Work?

Franchising is a unique way of running a business, but it’s something that appeals to a lot of people. Instead of starting a business from the ground up, franchising allows you to use what a franchisor already has in place. Once you have been approved to start a franchise, the franchisor will grant you the right to operate under their umbrella. This includes using the brand name, logo, products, services, training and anything else that the business uses.

How Does it Differ From Starting a Business?

There are a lot of similarities between starting a franchise and starting your own business; both involve you running a business, dealing with employees and providing products or services. However, there are some key differences. For example, starting a business requires you to organise and set up a lot of things from scratch. Marketing, distribution and product development are just three of the many things that you will need to manage yourself. With a franchise, this is all taken care of for you, and you can simply use what’s already in place.

However, you are likely to find that you have less freedom when you start a franchise. You are bound by what the business owner already has in place, and there will be certain rules that you must follow. For example, you may have to stick to the existing branding, and you won’t be able to develop your own products. You will be responsible for the day to day operations, such as staffing, but very little in terms of creativity and change.

Which is Right for Me?

Knowing which is right for you can be tough, especially as there are benefits to both. If you are looking for a simple and straightforward way of running a business, starting a franchise might be exactly what you are looking for. You are in charge of the day to day running of things, but you don’t need to worry about much beyond that. If you want a lot of control over the business – such as coming up with products, expanding services and branding – starting your own business is likely to be a better fit.
