Our debt finance expert: Metro Bank director Richard Saulet

I’m thedirector of Metro Bank Invoice and Asset Finance, andheadup a team of 100who look after all aspects of Metro Bank’s SME offering including distribution and operations.

As a champion of small businesses, Metro Bank is committed to supporting community businesses and working in partnership with them to help them realise their business goals and growth potential. Whilst many small businesses are overlooked and underserved by larger banks, almost half (45 per cent) of Metro Bank’s total lending goes to businesses; helping to fill a vital gap in the market and opening up access to funding.

What sets Metro Bank apart is its approach to banking. Rather than simply mirror a traditional banking model, Metro Bank is built on a retail model, placing great emphasis on service and convenience not rates and targets. As part of this, Metro Bank assigns a local business manager to each business account, who will take the time to get to know the business and understand how they can best meet its needs. Business managers often visit their clients at home to really get to the heart of what they do and the unique challenges they face. The bank also structures its opening hours around its customers opening seven days a week, for 362 days of the year and from early (8am) until late (8pm) during week days.

As part of its core offering to SMEs, the bank also provides specialist invoice finance and asset finance services that help make a difference to the many small businesses it serves.

Ijoined Metro Bank in June 2012 as commercial director, before taking mycurrent role as director of Metro Bank SME Finance to oversee Metro Bank’s invoice and asset finance business. Prior to joining the revolution, I’spent almost a year on the Virgin Money executive team, having joined after five years at RBS. My teeth were first cut in banking at Barclays, spending eight years at the bank before joining RBS and carrying out several senior executive roles. Since being at Metro Bank, I’veplayed a key role in delivering growth across the lending businesses, including running the Specialist Sector lending teams and also the Residential Mortgage Business.

Outside work, I havetwo young sons who keep meonmytoes at all times! I enjoykeeping active and recently returned to play cricket after 15 years out of the game.
