Despite being one of the most recognisable symbols of Britain's retail economy, our high streets are under threat. A combination of taxes, shopping behaviour changes and local authority regulation are putting pressure on independent and small retailers. High street closures: 14 shops vanishing each day in the UK
A net 1,123 stores vanished from the UK’s top 500 high streets in the first half of this year, according to new figures released by PwC. During this period, 1,569 shops opened while 2,692 closed – amounting to some 14 closures per day.
