Where to Start with a Content Marketing Strategy

Business Advice | 9 December 2022 | 1 year ago

Content marketing is an effective way of attracting and engaging your audience, and it’s a key part of retaining existing customers and clients. When you are publishing content regularly, you are given your audience a reason to connect with your business and remember who you are. Keeping on top of content – which can be articles, videos, podcasts and social media posts – can be overwhelming, especially if you are throwing everything you’ve got into this type of marketing. To ensure that your efforts are successful, use a content marketing strategy.

What is a Content Marketing Strategy?

Like any plan, a content marketing strategy is a detailed account of your content marketing efforts. It should cover who you are marketing to, the type of content you want to produce and what you are aiming for. It should also include when you will post the content, what platforms you will use and how it will be tracked. With a plan, it’s a lot easier to navigate the complex world of content, and it ensures that everyone is on the same page.

Why Do You Need a Content Marketing Strategy?

There is a lot that goes into digital marketing, but having a content marketing strategy is something that often gets overlooked. It’s important to have a content marketing plan, as this helps to ensure that your content output is consistent.

Content should be written in a similar tone of voice and style, and it should cover relevant topics. It should be high quality and posted regularly, and it should be written with your target audience in mind. With a content marketing plan, it’s a lot easier to see that all of your content is consistent with what has already been posted. A content marketing strategy also helps you to see the bigger picture and the long term goals of your digital marketing efforts, rather than simply what is being posted on any given day.

What Your Content Marketing Plan Should Include

A content marketing plan should be more than a brief list of the content you plan to post and when, and it should be more than a vague mention of what you hope to achieve from content marketing. Though it’s important to come up with a whole host of content ideas ahead of time – this could be blog titles, ideas for social media marketing or videos you could create – there’s actually a lot more than goes into a successful content marketing plan.

You should decide which keywords you are going to focus on, and plan how they can be incorporated into a variety of different content. It’s also important to think about timescales, including how often you are hoping to post content and when you expect to see results. It’s also beneficial to have a way of measuring your success and KPIs, as this is how you know if your content marketing efforts are working or if changes need to be made.
