Electric vehicles (EVs) are well on their way to becoming mainstream. It won’t be long until the odd one out will be the person buying the petrol car over a comparably-priced EV model.
According to Bloomberg, automakers plan to invest around 200 trillion pounds (yes, that’s a “t”) in EV technology by 2023. Changes like the one currently taking place in transportation come along once in a generation and offer unique advantages to those companies with the foresight to act.
Your employees will drive electric
Over 2 million electric vehicles were sold in 2018 globally, up from just a few thousand in 2010. BloombergNEF expects annual passenger EV sales to rise to 10 million in 2025, 28 million in 2030 and a staggering 56 million by 2040.
Many think that even these numbers are conservative, however, since 64.8% of new car sales in Norway this September were EVs.
These EV drivers are not just extreme environmentalists, they are your current and future employees and they’ll need someplace to fuel all of those electric cars.
Today, 80% of EV charging takes place either at home or work, yet only 10% of employees have access to workplace charging.
Attracting and retaining talent
To attract talent and helps to increase loyalty, engagement and retention among existing employees who are increasingly choosing work that provides meaning in their lives.
For three-quarters of millennials and half of all workers, that means working for an ethical, environmentally responsible company. In fact, nearly 40% of younger workers picked their current company based on its environmental goals, while 30% admitted to leaving an employer due to the lack of a sustainability plan.
EV charging infrastructure is a constant reminder to employees that working for you aligns with their values. It is not just employees that are seeing the benefits of going electric, though.
Sustainability = future success
A United Nations Global Compact—Accenture Strategy CEO Study on Sustainability found that 99% of large-company CEOs agree that “sustainability issues are important to the future success of their businesses” and credit stakeholders—especially customers and employees—for their epiphany.
“Technology has the potential to accelerate progress while helping companies enhance their competitive agility,” says Jessica Long, Accenture’s Managing Director of Strategy and Sustainability.
EV charging is a tangible benefit that employees use every day. It demonstrates that you’re willing to put your money where your mouth is with regard to sustainability and that they can feel good about working for a green company.
Affordable AND Sustainable
While it may be tempting to offer low-cost perks like foosball and ping pong tables, these provide almost zero value to most workers and can be disruptive or even annoying to many others.
The effectiveness of benefits such as wellness programs are hard to gauge and may provide less value than once believed.
EV charging, on the other hand, offers a significant ROI for both you and your employees.
Employees, for the reasons noted above, are happier and more productive and, with networked charging, you can immediately track the effectiveness of your charging initiatives. Subsidies, power management software and subscription pricing can even bring the cost of the infrastructure in line with much less expensive benefits.
Renewable energy, including solar and wind power, is already less expensive to produce worldwide than electricity derived from fossil fuels. LeasePlan released its annual Car Cost Index this summer, with the latest analysis showing that the total cost of ownership of electric vehicles (EVs) is at price parity with ICE vehicles in several European countries.

Many early adopters of charging infrastructure have seen commercial benefits as well as a more motivated and committed workforce.
In Ohio USA, Easton is the leading regional shopping, dining and entertainment destination, and one who invested early in EV charging. They have seen that about 40% of drivers who charge spend more than the average time inside, with around 350 EV drivers using the new stations each month, a number which has been rising each month since the stations were installed.

Drivers rely on EV charging apps to quickly find places where they can charge. Because EV drivers tend to charge their cars while they shop, work or play, having charging available can convince drivers to choose your locations over a competitor’s.
Organisations that provide EV charging to employees will have an outsized competitive advantage in the coming e-mobility revolution. Those who adopt today are still able to do so at the ground level, ensuring that they can reap all the benefits.
