However, as a business, it’s not simply a case of posting an update or two and seeing what happens. You need to think about your audience, the type of content that you are posting and how it can benefit your business. Below, we have taken a look at four key things to remember when using social media for business.

Know Your Audience

When you are using social media for business, it’s important to know your audience. Taking the time to understand your audience, and catering to their taste, will help you to gain traction. This is because people are more likely to take notice of, and engage with, social media posts that are of interest to them. You should focus on topics and content that they will find interesting, and write in a way that appeals to them.

Join the Conversation

A lot of businesses only use social media marketing to announce new products and services, but customers will be much more likely to follow and engage with you if you treat it as a two way dialogue. They don’t want to only see information about your latest product release, they want to get to know you as a unique brand. This means replying to comments, answering questions and joining in conversations. Social media is a great way to build a valuable relationship with customers and clients.

Be Accountable

The immediacy and publicity social media marketing affords is a two edged sword; your missteps or failures to communicate are public, and they can be spread very quickly. If you make a mistake, everyone will know about it, so be accountable for your errors. If you accidentally post incorrect information or a link doesn’t work, hold your hands up and issue a correction. Being accountable for your actions shows that you are an honest and trustworthy business.

Qualitative Value

One of the downsides of social media marketing is that likes and follows don’t translate easily to sales. Someone liking your post doesn’t mean they will definitely buy from you, and the number of followers you have doesn’t represent the amount of sales you will make. So, you might need to stop thinking of social media marketing as a direct sales channel and instead consider how it adds value to your brand. Rather than benefiting the bottom line directly, social media has qualitative value, and it’s an effective way of raising brand awareness and boosting your online presence.
