The July Productivity Toolkit for Busy Founders

Staff writer | 30 July 2025 | 1 year ago

July can be a bit of a strange month for business founders. Everything is a little bit quieter, business slows down and a lot of your team are likely heading off on holiday. There’s undeniable benefits of a slow month, especially if the rest of your year is go, go, go and you rarely have time to breathe. But, when you’re used to operating at full speed, this slower pace can feel unsettling and unproductive.

This is why it’s important to use July to your advantage. It’s a chance to reset, refocus and use the mid-year slowdown to get ahead, and that’s all centred on using a productivity toolkit.

Productivity Slows in July and That’s Not a Bad Thing

  • Everyone’s in Holiday Mode – Many people, including clients and team members, take long holidays in July. With children off school, it’s the ideal time for a family break. That means fewer meetings, slower email responses and a general lack of urgency, especially if decision-makers are on annual leave.
  • Mid-Year Burnout – By July, you’ve already burned through the intensity of six months of business, which probably involved growth pushes, product launches, customer support and investor meetings. You’re likely to feel depleted or distracted by July, which can lead to slowing productivity.
  • Disrupted Routines – With team members working reduced hours, logging on from remote locations or being out of office entirely, previously smooth operations can feel surprisingly complicated or inconsistent. Productivity slows as everyone tries to get used to a new, temporary way of doing things.
  • False Sense of Relaxation – When everything slows down externally, it’s easy to internalise that as a sign to step back, disengage and switch off. There’s nothing wrong with taking a break but, without structure and a plan to resume, that brief pause can slip into a productivity freefall.

July Productivity Toolkit: Maintain Progress and Productivity

A July productivity toolkit isn’t just a list of things to do, or a selection of tools you can use to help you through the month. It’s a framework that helps you to maintain clarity, progress, and purpose throughout July.

Schedule Weekly Strategy Hours

Schedule time each week and dedicate it to planning and strategic thinking, such as reviewing KPIs, reevaluating priorities, identifying bottlenecks and mapping out opportunities. Many business founders find themselves stuck in day-to-day execution of running a business. But, by having strategy hours every week, you have time to focus on areas of the business that may otherwise be neglected, such as brand positioning and competitor research.

Mid-Year Review, Refocus and Realignment

Find the time in July to have a structured reflection on your first half of the year. Think about what’s succeeded, what underperformed and what surprised you. By reviewing the progress you’ve made and any challenges you’ve faced in July, you’re still giving yourself enough time to implement changes and make a difference before the end of the year. Identify which goals you hit and missed, which activities drove the most ROI, and what needs to change before you continue on.

Internal System Refresh

Use July to fine tune, or completely change, any internal processes that have been struggling so far this year. That could include onboarding, hiring, sales, support or content workflows, all of which need a refresh every once in a while. As July brings with it a quieter pace, you’ll have less to do, fewer problems to solve and more freedom to experiment. Ask your team where friction exists and what needs to be done to fix it, as they may have noticed an inefficient or ineffective system that would have passed you by.

Sprint Through Your ‘To Do’ List

Regardless of how meaningful a task is, you can’t do everything at once, and many founders quickly notice work piling up. If you have strategic or creative work that gets pushed aside during busier months, find time to sprint through your list in July. Choose one project to focus on per week, block a few hours daily to work without any distractions, and keep going until you’re all caught up.

Founder Learning and Development

Dedicate regular time to learning and professional development in July, even if you consider yourself to be a skilled and knowledgeable founder. As July is a slower month, it’s the ideal time to read books, take short courses, refresh your software skills or get to grips with new industries and trends. You could even revisit customer personas or competitor landscapes to make sure you’re fully aware of what’s going on in your industry.

Customised Founder Dashboard

With lots to keep track of as a founder, you might drop the ball occasionally. If you do, you’re not alone. You might miss a deadline, forget about a meeting and start working in a way that doesn’t quite align with your business goals. A custom dashboard is hugely beneficial, as it keeps your goals, habits, tasks, priorities and vision in front of you, ensuring that you always remember what needs to be done, when and why. With things slowing down in July, it’s the ideal time to get your dashboard set up and organised, ready for the busier months ahead.

As a business founder, think of July as a pitstop. You’re mid-way through the year and though there’s nothing wrong with having a break – if anything, it’s encouraged, as you don’t want to burn out – it’s also the perfect time to recalibrate everything. By doing so, you can go into the second half of the year prepared and ready for whatever comes your way.
