The Benefits and Challenges of Doing Business in China

Regardless of the type of business you have and the industry that you work in, the appeal of growing your company and expanding into new markets is often too tempting to ignore. It’s a way to solidify yourself in your industry, reach a wider target market and increase your offerings. Of course, this is all done in an attempt to boost revenue and success. There are a lot of obvious international markets to consider, but China is one that is often at the top of people’s lists. This is because China is a large and powerful nation, and there is a lot of potential for business growth and development there. In fact, doing business in China is something that a lot of business owners dream of, but is it all that it’s cracked up to be?

In this blog, we have taken a look at some of the advantages and disadvantages that you are likely to experience if you choose to do business in China.

What are the Challenges of doing Business in China?

For a lot of businesses, the dream is to do business in China, and it’s easy to see why. However, this isn’t always as easy as a lot of people initially assume. There are many challenges that come with doing business in China, three of which we have listed below.

Market Access

There is no denying that China is a huge and impactful country in the world of business, but that doesn’t mean that it’s at the forefront of everything. When it comes to trading with other countries, China is lacking market access. This is because China is a relatively isolated country, without strong trade links to the rest of Asia, something that is even more apparent when it comes to trading with the rest of the world. The lack of market access means that a lot of tariffs and regulations need to be taken into account, which can create issues and make doing business in China a lot more complicated than doing business elsewhere.

Cultural Differences

If you have spent any time in China – or if you know a little bit about its culture and residents – you will know that Chinese tastes are often very different to Western ones. This means that a lot of what’s popular in Western countries is not likely to be popular in China, and vice versa. A lot of the top selling products and services in China are of very little interest to UK, European and US markets. In China, there is often a preference for domestic companies and products, making it difficult for other businesses to break through.

Regulation and Bureaucracy

There are a lot of regulatory hoops to jump through if you want to do business in China, and the bureaucracy is obvious from the very beginning. This means that gaining basic licences can be laborious, time consuming and complex, and there is no guarantee of success at the end of it. There are a huge number of unfamiliar laws around selling and manufacturing in China, and it’s rarely as straightforward as doing business elsewhere.

What are the Benefits of doing Business in China?

Though there are a number of challenges with doing business in China, there are also a lot of benefits to take advantage of. China’s emerging economy, strong infrastructure and low cost labour make it an attractive landscape for business owners.

Huge Emerging Economy

China is the second largest economy in the world and one with an emerging middle class – China is one of the BRIC countries, which have seen huge economic growth in the last two decades – meaning that there is a huge tendency towards consumption in coming years. As the Chinese economy continues to grow and develop, and the emerging middle class continues to have the means to boost consumption, there is likely to be a lot of room for emerging businesses, services and products.

Low Cost Labour

One of the biggest costs for businesses is labour, but this is less of a problem when you’re doing business in China. China has a plentiful supply of cheap labour, especially for manual work and this can significantly reduce a business’ overheads. With less money being spent on labour, there is a wider margin for profit and businesses are likely to find it easier to succeed. Manufacturing for Western companies is very popular in China, and low cost labour is something that a lot of businesses are already taking advantage of. It’s often a lot more affordable to outsource manufacturing and labour to China, than it is to manage things closer to home.

Strong Infrastructure

One of the biggest benefits of doing business in China is being able to take advantage of the country’s strong infrastructure. China’s infrastructure is well developed, with an extensive road and rail network, as well as modern ports. In fact, Shanghai is one of the busiest ports in the world). China also boasts efficient airports, perfectly linking it up with country’s around the world. This strong infrastructure means that operating a business, sourcing raw materials and managing a supply chain are generally simple tasks. This isn’t always the case in countries without the same kind of infrastructure and connections.

As you can see, there are both challenges and benefits that come with doing business in China. For a lot of businesses, the challenges are merely small hurdles to overcome in order to benefit from China’s infrastructure, economy and labour. However, for others, the lack of market access and cultural differences are enough to sway them away, and the regulations are too costly to be worth navigating. When it comes to deciding if doing business in China is right for you, you need to weigh up the pros and cons, and how they relate to your industry. Whereas China is the ideal place for some businesses to branch out to, it’s not for everyone.
