How to Stay Inspired When Business Gets Tough

Business Advice | 13 January 2025 | 2 years ago

Business isn’t all smooth sailing. In fact, you might even feel as though business is tough, challenging and a lot of stress more often than not. Though hard work really does pay off – think about it, the hard work you put into a business is more than made up for when that business grows, succeeds and brings in a significant profit – but it’s not easy to stay motivated in the meantime.

Top Tips for Staying Motivated, Inspired and Productive in Business

Whether you’ve got a new product idea that you can’t quite get right or a business that’s struggling to grow at the speed you were hoping for, you’ve probably thought about throwing in the towel, giving up and turning your attention to something new. It’s not easy to stay inspired when business gets tough, but it’s not the end of the world, nor is it a reason to admit defeat.

  • Take a Break – Don’t risk burning out by refusing to take a break, especially if you’ve been putting a lot of hours into a project. Take the time to step back from work, relax and recharge. When you do come back to the task, you’ll feel refreshed, energised and ready to go.
  • Have a Clear Vision – It doesn’t matter what you’re trying to achieve, it’s hard to stay inspired if you don’t have a clear vision of what the end result looks like. You might be trying to solve a problem, start a new business or break into a new market. Whatever it is, you need to have a clear idea of what you want to achieve, how and when.
  • Set Goals and Track Your Progress – It’s hard to stay inspired if you don’t have set goals to work towards, even more so if you’re not tracking your progress. Seeing how far you’ve come and that your hard work is paying off will help you to stay focused, motivated and working towards your goals. Feeling accomplished and experiencing small successes along the way will keep you working towards bigger goals.
  • Don’t Be Afraid of Failure – There’s a high chance that you’ll fail at some aspect of running a business; it’s the case for everyone, even experienced business owners and entrepreneurs. But, you can’t let failure hold you back. Accept that failure could happen, embrace it and throw yourself into innovation regardless. If you do fail, use it as a learning experience.
  • Ask for Help – You don’t need to approach business alone, so take advantage of your support network and ask for help when you need it. There’s a lot of resources out there, and other entrepreneurs are a great source of advice and support. They know what you’re going through and they have firsthand experience of how difficult it can be to stay inspired when business is low.
  • Prioritise Self-Care – Taking time away from business when things get tough might sound counterproductive, but it’s actually a key part of staying inspired. Things like getting enough sleep, eating well and exercising can give you the boost you need to stick with business ideas, even if they’re not working out in the way you wanted. Even something as small as going for a walk at lunchtime or making time to read after work can make a big difference.
  • Plan Ahead for Busy Periods – There will be times in business when you have a lot of time on your hands, and there will be times when you have too much to do. Use slower periods to plan ahead for when things get tough, even if this means writing an ‘in case of emergency’ blog post. You’ll be able to keep up with consistently posting for customers and marketing purposes, without the stress of not having time to rustle something up at the last minute.
  • Celebrate Small Successes – You don’t need to wait until you reach a major goal to celebrate your success. Take a moment to celebrate small milestones being reached, feedback from happy customers or new client acquisitions. Though these might not be the big goal that you’re aiming for, they’re still a reflection of your hard work.
  • Know When to Give Up – You’ve probably read a lot about the importance of never giving up in business, but sometimes you need to. This doesn’t mean giving up completely, it just means taking a break when you need to, and going back to tasks at a later date. If something isn’t working out and you’re struggling to stay motivated, change your focus until you feel inspired enough to continue.
  • Get Your Creative Juices Flowing – If you’re feeling stuck with a project, work on something else for a while, and go back to the first project another time. Sometimes, you need to get your creative juices flowing in another way to see a way through. It’s a bit like how those with outside perspectives often find solutions that others might not have thought of. Take a step back, forget about it and enjoy a change of pace.
  • Reward Yourself – You don’t need to wait for a big success to reward yourself. If you’ve reached a small goal or you’ve completed a complex task, find time to do something that you enjoy. This will help you to stay motivated and inspired, as you know another reward is coming if you continue working hard.
