How to Reduce My Business’ Carbon Footprint?

Business Advice | 27 January 2023 | 1 year ago

There are a lot of ways to reduce a business carbon footprint, many of which are relatively easy to do. Climate change is something that is affecting everyone, and we need to work together to combat the damage that’s being caused.

What is Your Carbon Footprint?

Before you can reduce a business carbon footprint, you need to know what exactly a carbon footprint is. Your carbon footprint is the amount of greenhouse gas – including carbon dioxide and methane, which can be harmful to the environment – that your business generates by its actions. You will also have a carbon footprint as an individual. The food you eat, the materials you use, the amount you recycle, how you travel and your energy usage all have an impact.

How to Calculate Your Carbon Footprint

A lot of people make the mistake of assuming that calculating your carbon footprint is a complex and time consuming task, but this isn’t the case. There are a number of online calculators that can help to calculate a business’ carbon footprint, and doing so only takes a few minutes. You will be asked questions about a variety of things such as how much you recycle, how much meat you eat, how many flights you take and how much energy you use. By answering a handful of simple questions, it’s possible to get a rough idea of how much your business processes are harming the environment.

Why Should You Reduce Your Carbon Footprint?

The main reason to reduce your carbon footprint is to combat climate change and to help the environment as a whole. For example, by making the air cleaner and reducing pollution. However, there are some reasons to reduce your carbon footprint that will benefit you a lot closer to home. Reducing your carbon footprint can help you to live a healthier lifestyle, and it can help you to save money by lowering your energy bills.

How to Reduce Your Carbon Footprint

There are many ways to reduce a business carbon footprint, and you can ‘pick and choose’ the ones that work for you. For a lot of businesses, one of the easiest ways to reduce a carbon footprint is to recycle. Though a lot of workplaces do recycle, there is often room for improvement. Instead of simply encouraging staff to recycle paper, you could implement ways to recycle other materials. You could even take recycling further by recycling warehouse waste and material offcuts.

Another simple way to lower your carbon footprint is to reduce unnecessary travel, which has been made a lot easier by the growing popularity of remote working and conducting business via video calls. Reducing water usage makes a difference, as does using energy efficient equipment. You could also consider swapping to sustainable suppliers to reduce your carbon footprint.
