How to Improve Decision-Making with Business Intelligence Tools

Business Advice | 25 October 2024 | 2 years ago

There are a lot of decisions to make as a business owner. Regardless of the industry you’re in, or the service and products you provide, you have to make decisions. In fact, it probably feels as though you’re always having to make a decision about one thing or another. This can be stressful, especially if you’re someone who often worries that they’re making the wrong decision, or if you’re someone who has experienced just how much can go wrong if you make the wrong choice. Thankfully, business intelligence tools exist and they make the decision-making process a lot easier.

What are Business Intelligence Tools?

When you make a business decision, it’s important to do so confidently, which is where business intelligence tools come in. These tools are a vital part of making data-driven decisions – more on those below – as a business, enabling you to avoid having to make estimated guesses and hoping for the best. Business intelligence tools collect data from various sources and give you access to the information, which can be showcased in charts, graphics and visual representations. These make the information easier to understand and use for decision-making.

With business intelligence tools, you can monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) in real time, look for trends in customer behaviour, identify market trends and generate reports for stakeholders. Business intelligence tools make it a lot easier for your team to work together as everyone has access to the same information.

Making Data-Driven Decisions as a Business Owner

Business intelligence tools allow you to make data-driven decisions, but what exactly does that mean, and how can it benefit your business? Data-driven decisions are those made using your business’ KPIs and data, which can be used to put accurate plans into action. When you make decisions based on guesswork, there’s no guarantee that you’re making the right decision. But, with data-driven decision-making, you can make decisions based on facts. This increases the chances of the decision being the right one and, at the same time, gives you the confidence to act quickly with real time data to hand. For example, you can use the data to find customer or product patterns, and then make predictions with that information in mind.

How to Make the Right Decisions Using Business Intelligence Tools

  • Give Yourself a Vision or Goal to Focus On – Before you start using business intelligence to make decisions, you need to have a clear vision or goal. You’re likely to have a lot of data to hand, but not all of it’s going to be useful to the specific decision that you’re making.  You need to narrow it down. This will help you to find the data that’s relevant to what you want to achieve. You can then create a strategy with this in mind. It’s good to have data, but data is only beneficial if you have a way to use it.
  • Use Various Sources of Data – Without data sources, you’re not going to have any information for business intelligence tools to use. Data can be collected from a variety of places including internal business processes and external sources, and both have their uses. For example, you could use ROI data to determine if a business investment is working as well as you had hoped. By looking at output and input data, you can gain an insight into how productive your business is.
  • Make Sure Your Data is Organised – It’s a lot easier to view and use data when it’s organised, and business decisions are unlikely to be accurate if the data you’re using is hard to understand. You don’t want to make a decision that you think is data-driven, only to realise that because of disorganised data, you’ve used old information. You don’t want to make a decision that you think is based on real time information, only to later see that more accurate and up to date information was available.
  • Don’t Be Intimidated by Data Analysis – A lot of people hear the phrase ‘data analysis’ and they’re immediately filled with a sense of dread, assuming it to be a complex and time consuming task. Luckily, business intelligence tools do all of this for you. Analysing data will give you actionable insights that you can use to make data-driven decisions. For example, you could use business intelligence tools to look into case studies, testimonials, surveys and reviews to determine what your target audience thinks about your business. With this information, you can make changes to your strategy to correct any issues. Similarly, if you want to improve your business’ SEO, business intelligence tools can analyse your competitors’ data to find out what they’re doing wrong, giving you a shot at beating them to the top spot.
  • Always Come to a Conclusion – Don’t just look at data, make sure to draw conclusions from what it’s telling you. Think about whether the data is telling you anything that backs up something you already thought you knew, or if there’s anything new to learn from it. Consider how the data can be used to help your decision-making and benefit your business, and how you can put it to good use.
