Building a Sustainable Business: Eco-Friendly Strategies That Work
Building a sustainable business is no longer just a trend or something that’s nice to do for the planet, it’s a necessity for businesses that want to appeal to the growing number of eco-conscious consumers. With growing consumer demand for sustainable practices and environmental responsibility, you need to adopt sustainable strategies to stay competitive and reduce their carbon footprint.
How to Make Your Business More Planet-Friendly
Recycle as Much as Possible
Recycling is something that most people do at home; you probably don’t think twice about putting an empty soft drink can into the recycling bin, and recycling delivery boxes is probably second nature. But, this doesn’t always transfer to the workplace. One of the simplest things you can do to make your business more sustainable is to recycle as much as possible. Put as much into recycling at work as you do at home, and encourage everyone else to do the same.
You might already have a recycling system in place at work, but are you doing as much as you can?
There are two ways to approach recycling. You can approach it by disposing of paper, cardboard and plastic in the correct way. You can also find ways to reuse the materials that you accumulate during your day-to-day business operations. This can also save your business money. Think about how much you spend each year on paper, and now think about how much money you could save if you encouraged employees to make use of scrap paper and discarded materials whenever they can.
Swap to Sustainable Packaging
If sending products to customers is part of your business operations, consider swapping to sustainable packaging. There are a wide range of sustainable packaging options out there, all of which will help you to become more eco-friendly as a business. A lot of other businesses are making changes to the way that they package goods, and following suit portrays your business positively. Not only does swapping to sustainable packaging cue down on the resources that your business uses, but it helps you to appeal to eco-conscious consumers.
There are various ways to approach sustainable packaging. For example, you could reduce the size of your packages, and save materials. You could swap to eco-friendly packing materials and use less plastic. You could use paper packaging as much as possible, as this is easier to recycle than plastic. You could even go as far as using water-based inks for printing designs on boxes, as these allow the box to be recycled.
Use Less Energy
It might sound obvious, but a lot of businesses overlook the impact that simply using less energy can have on their eco-friendliness. Though turning one light off isn’t going to suddenly cut your energy use in half, making small changes does make a big difference.
Reducing how much energy you use has a direct effect on your business’ carbon footprint, whilst also reducing your energy bill. There are a lot of ways to cut down on your energy consumption, and doing so is likely to be easier than you think. Swapping to LED lights and energy efficient light bulbs has a big impact, as does upgrading old appliances and equipment to energy efficiency alternatives. You could even switch to automated lights throughout your workplace, meaning that lights won’t be left on long after everyone has left the room.
Be mindful about how long you are running the heating and air conditioning for, and make sure you’ve only got them on when you need them on. There’s no point in having the heating on at the weekend, when employees are at home, or late into the evening if everyone has left by 6pm. Encourage employees to turn their equipment off at the end of the day.
If you are a business that uses vehicles for deliveries, one of the most impactful things you can do is invest in electric vehicles. These aren’t as much of a drain on energy resources, and they show customers that you’re taking steps towards sustainability.
Make Use of Local Resources
There are a lot of local resources out there, and using them can make your business more sustainable. This means using local suppliers for goods and inventory, which cuts down on the amount of energy you use sourcing items, as well as the amount of energy used during shipping and sourcing. As well as cutting down on the amount of energy, this also reduces emissions.
Making use of local resources also has the benefit of you knowing exactly where your stock has come from. You can visit suppliers in person, as other local businesses for recommendations, and check out their quality control. Plus, putting money into local resources means putting money into your local community, which gives local businesses a boost.
Embrace Eco-Friendly Strategies Elsewhere
If you want to take your eco-friendly strategies even further, embrace sustainability outside of the workplace. There are a lot of ways to do this, such as volunteering to help with a sustainability scheme, creating products or services that help people to be more sustainable, or donating a portion of your profits to an environmental charity. Not only does this help your business to become more sustainable, but it showcases you as a company that eco-conscious consumers should be paying attention to.
